This track started out with just the rhythm part and then somehow turned into what I think it would sound like if Joe Satriani played lead guitar for Mogwai and everyone was a bit tipsy.
I rather like Mogwai although they sort of teeter between being mopey-but-epic and just plain mopey; particular standouts for me would be Hardcore Will Never Die But You Will and, of course, Young Team.
I do however think they’re slightly hamstrung by indie-rock tradition, which is why I consciously decided to add in some slightly more modern guitar techniques. I think a bit of subtle whammy bar and legato adds a nice wooziness to the track that you wouldn’t otherwise get if you played everything straight.
Gear-wise, the lead guitar is my JEM; I can’t for the life of me remember what I used for the rhythm part but it might be a Squier Telecaster Custom with the full-range humbuckers that I have since sold. Equally, it might just be the JEM again. Plugins are just the basic Logic Studio amp sims, which work fine for these sort of slightly lo-fi clean and fuzz tones.
